Abstract This paper presents an optimal phase-driving algorithm to improve the power transfer performance of a three-phase pad in a 50-kW wireless charging system for electric vehicles (EVs). The pad consists of vertical- and horizontal-flux coils. Under misalignment, variations in the coupling coefficients can cause flux-linkage cancellation at the receiver pad, reducing the output power capability and phase power balance. Accordingly, this paper analyzes the flux-linkage characteristics with respect to receiver-pad position, identifies the optimal driving phase for each misalignment condition by minimizing the flux-cancellation, and proposes a phase-driving algorithm based on identified phase. Experimental validation was conducted using a 50-kW inductive power transfer (IPT) system employing a double-sided LCC compensation network. The results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm improves the output power and power balance among the phases under representative misalignment conditions.
