Abstract This study analyzed a fuel cell-battery hybrid power system under real ship power demand conditions. A load profile was constructed using measured data from an electric propulsion ferry, including propulsion and hotel load power. Three rule-based power distribution strategies were compared: power-following, SOC-step, and reference power-based strategies. The power-following strategy reduced battery power burden but increased fuel cell power fluctuation and showed saturation in high-load regions. The SOC-step strategy enabled intuitive SOC management but caused stepwise fuel cell power changes and increased battery participation. The reference power-based strategy reduced rapid fuel cell power variation by assigning the average load to the fuel cell and transient load to the battery. The results indicate that ship power distribution strategies should be evaluated by considering fuel economy, SOC behavior, battery burden, and fuel cell power stability.
