Abstract This study investigated the chemical and space charge characteristics of Tree-Retardant Cross-Linked Polyethylene (TR-XLPE) for DC insulation applications. XLPE and TR-XLPE were thermally aged at 140°C for up to 30 days and analyzed using DSC, OIT, FTIR, and space charge measurements. Both materials showed decreases in crystallization enthalpy and OIT during the early stage of aging, while crystallization enthalpy gradually recovered with prolonged aging. FTIR analysis revealed changes in carbonyl and ester groups caused by additive depletion and oxidation. Before aging, TR-XLPE showed better space charge suppression than XLPE; however, space charge accumulation increased with aging and exceeded that of XLPE after long-term aging. Yellowing and degradation of space charge characteristics were also observed. These results show that thermal aging significantly changes the chemical and space charge characteristics of TR-XLPE.
