Abstract This paper proposes a butterfly-shaped wire dipole antenna, referred to as the Butterfly Broadband Dipole (BBD), for ionospheric- radiation-based HF communication systems, and presents a comprehensive performance analysis. The conventional BBD antenna, widely employed over the HF band (2?30 MHz), requires a large installation footprint, with an approximate height of 26 m, length of 76 m, and width of 45.7 m. To enable deployment in height-restricted environments, the proposed design increases the number of antenna wires from 8 to 10 while reducing the overall height relative to the conventional structure.
The proposed antenna has a butterfly geometry with a total length of 76 m, a total width of 45 m, and a maximum height of 18 m. Broadband impedance matching is achieved by employing a 1:300 impedance transformer. The target performance is to maintain a VSWR of 2.5:1 or less and a realized gain of at least 5 dBi across the entire 2?30 MHz band. The antenna characteristics are systematically evaluated by comparing the impedance and radiation behavior as functions of installation height and number of wire elements, thereby verifying the design validity and practical applicability of the proposed structure.
